The IKEA Effect: Why Your Own Work Feels More Valuable
The IKEA effect explains why people value things they build. See what the origami experiment found, where the bias stops, and how to use it wisely.

You finish assembling a shelf. One corner is slightly uneven, the process took longer than expected, and a ready-made version may have been easier to buy. Yet the shelf feels unusually valuable.
That attachment has a name: the IKEA effect. It describes our tendency to value something more after contributing our own labor to it. A clever origami experiment made the effect visible in cents—and showed just how large the gap can become.
The origami experiment behind the IKEA effect
Researchers Michael Norton, Daniel Mochon, and Dan Ariely asked college students to assemble a simple origami crane or frog. Afterward, each builder stated how much they would pay to keep the object they had just made.
The bidding procedure was designed to encourage an honest reservation price. A random number from zero to 100 was drawn. If that number exceeded the participant’s bid in cents, the participant went home without the origami. If it was equal to or lower than the bid, the participant paid the bid and kept it.
A separate group, who had not made the objects and did not know the builders, bid on those same amateur creations. A third group bid on origami made by experts.
The average bids were striking:
- builders valued their own origami at 23¢;
- outsiders valued the builders’ origami at 5¢;
- expert-made origami was valued at 27¢.
The builders’ bid was 4.6 times the outsiders’ bid—hence the memorable summary “almost five times more.” Their valuation also came surprisingly close to the expert-made result.
The paper’s title captured the pattern neatly: “When labor leads to love.”
Why effort can change perceived value
The basic result is easy to recognize. Once we have invested time and attention in an object, it no longer feels interchangeable with every similar object on a shelf. It contains a record of our decisions and effort.
Researchers have proposed several connected mechanisms.
First, making something can create psychological ownership. We begin to experience the object as ours before considering what an impartial buyer would pay for it. That sense of ownership can increase valuation.
Second, successful construction can support a feeling of competence. A completed chair, folded crane, edited video, or finished study guide provides evidence that we were capable of producing something. Follow-up research found that building can help bolster or restore feelings of competence, which can strengthen attachment to the result.
Third, effort itself may become a cue. If we worked hard on something, we may infer that the outcome must be worth the work. Admitting that the result is mediocre can feel uncomfortably close to admitting that the effort was wasted.
These explanations overlap, and the literature does not reduce the effect to one universal cause. The safest conclusion is the practical one: personal labor can change the maker’s valuation, even when outsiders do not see the same added value.
Successful completion is the important boundary
The IKEA effect is not simply “more struggle equals more love.” The original research emphasized successful completion. When participants could not complete the task, or when a finished product was later taken apart, the valuation boost weakened.
That distinction makes intuitive sense. A finished object can signal competence and ownership. An abandoned pile of parts may signal frustration instead.
Later research has supported the broad IKEA-effect pattern and the role of psychological ownership, while not reproducing every proposed boundary in exactly the same way. That is normal scientific texture: the central effect can be robust even while researchers continue to refine when it appears and which mechanism matters most.
So the useful formulation is careful:
When people successfully build something, they often value it more than observers do.
It is a tendency, not a law. Skill, outcome quality, personal relevance, and whether the task feels chosen or imposed can all shape the result.
Why IKEA is the perfect name
IKEA did not invent self-assembly, but the company made it a defining part of a global retail system. Flat-packed products reduce storage and transportation costs, while customers provide the final assembly labor at home.
That arrangement has an obvious operational benefit. The psychological benefit is less visible: the customer participates in turning a box of components into a usable object.
The finished table is no longer only something purchased. It is something completed.
The name works because it captures a familiar emotional mismatch. A homemade or self-assembled object can feel more valuable to its maker than its materials, craftsmanship, or resale price would suggest to anyone else.
Where the effect helps
The IKEA effect can be useful when effort creates genuine engagement instead of pointless friction.
In products, a small amount of meaningful customization can help people feel ownership. Arranging a dashboard, choosing a layout, naming a workspace, or assembling a simple object can turn a generic product into my product.
In creative work, participation can increase commitment. People may care more about a plan, process, or team artifact when they helped shape it.
In learning, the safest application is not to claim that every difficult task improves memory. The IKEA-effect studies measured valuation, not long-term recall. But they do offer a useful design question: can the learner produce part of the result instead of only receiving it?
For example, a learner might attempt an answer before revealing it, organize notes into a personal structure, generate a comparison, or build a small set of flashcards from source material. Those actions can create agency and ownership. Whether they improve learning should still be judged using evidence about retrieval practice, feedback, and memory—not the IKEA effect alone.
Where the effect misleads us
The same attachment that increases commitment can distort judgment.
A founder may overvalue a feature because the team spent months building it. A writer may defend a paragraph because it took hours to produce. A homeowner may expect buyers to pay extra for a renovation that mainly reflects personal taste.
The warning sign is a gap between maker value and outside value.
Before keeping, pricing, or defending something you built, ask:
- What would I think if someone else had made this?
- What evidence shows that another person values it too?
- Am I evaluating the outcome, or protecting the effort already invested?
- Would I choose the same approach if I were starting today?
These questions do not make personal attachment wrong. They separate sentimental value from market value and past effort from future usefulness.
The practical takeaway
Effort can create meaning. It can transform a mass-produced kit into a personal accomplishment, a sheet of paper into a treasured crane, or a blank page into an idea we want to protect.
That is the charm of the IKEA effect—and its trap.
When you want engagement, let people contribute something real and give them a fair chance to complete it successfully. When you need an objective decision, step outside the maker’s perspective and ask what the finished result is worth without the story of your labor attached.
Sometimes we love an object because it is excellent. Sometimes we love it because we can still see our fingerprints on it.
